The Third Grade Reading Guarantee (TGRG)

If you have a child in grade 3, no doubt you have heard and received information regarding the Third Grade Reading Guarantee.  The discussion begins in Kindergarten as teachers monitor if a student is "on track" in reading.  The monitoring continues through grades 1 and 2, culminating in the third grade with the "guarantee".  The purpose is to ensure that by grade 3 students are able to "read to learn" as opposed to simply "learning to read". Learn more about the test here.

Students must score a 683 on the English Language Arts test or a 46 on the reading sub-score of the test.  If students fail to meet this criteria, they may score a promotion score on the alternative tests found here.  Failure to meet the reading promotion score by one of these methods will result in retention in grade 3.  Student have attempts in the fall and spring during third grade and an optional attempt the summer following third grade.
