Special Services Program-Search for Children with Disabilities

School districts throughout Ohio participate yearly in an effort to identify, locate and evaluate all children suspected of having a disability from ages 3-21.  Disability means conditions such as specific learning disability, multiple disabilities, intellectual disability, deaf or hearing impaired, blind or visually impaired, orthopedically impaired, autistic, emotionally disturbed, traumatic brain injury, other health impaired or having a speech or language disability as defined by state and federal law.

Many children with disabilities are not visible because they do not yet function in the mainstream of the community.  Also, many unidentified children with disabilities are preschoolers and not yet in school.  Their parents and/or guardians may not be aware of programs and services that are available to assist them.

The school psychologist may work with parents, teachers, and school personnel providing consultation on:

  • ways to improve teaching methods or the learning environment of the classroom or home.
  • ways to improve the working relationship between teacher, parents and administrators.
  • information and outside referral sources.
  • in-service and staff development.

The school psychologist also

  • serves on the pupil personnel committee that determines early entrance decisions.
  • provides second opinion assessments for students referred by the Gifted Coordinator.
  • serves as a member of the Intervention Assistance Team (IAT) that meets regularly in each building. (The purpose of the IAT is to offer support to teachers and parents in developing interventions to meet the academic and behavioral needs of students.)
