Councilman Visits FHS

Posted on: February 3, 2016 12:00 am

This week, Mr. Katris’ American Government students were treated to a guest speaker – Franklin Vice Mayor Carl Bray.

Our students are currently studying the role of state and local governments, fiscal policies, and civic engagement. To further their understanding of these topics and make relevant connections to real-world experiences and careers, Councilman Bray was kind enough to spend his entire day with our students. The councilman covered the topics of income taxes, separation between city and school budgets, city government offices and department breakdowns, civic involvement, and current city projects.

In the Q&A portion, Councilman Bray responded to a variety of student questions and concerns. Such responses ranged from topics of water treatment and safety (in the wake of such issues facing Flint, Michigan) to deficit spending. The councilman was impressed by both the depth of content knowledge of Franklin government students and their desire to engage in issues concerning their city.

The Franklin High School Social Studies Department would like to thank the Vice Mayor for his time and effort in promoting government education and civic involvement to our upperclassman.
